Teatro Juarez is a beautiful theatre in downtown Guanajuato, Mexico that my hubby and I have wanted to visit since we moved here two months ago. Unlike the U.S., where almost any event can be found online, you find out about most events here by walking through the city and seeing the latest posters.
When we saw the poster for a classical guitar concert coming up – and at 20 pesos each (just over $1) – we decided it was the perfect time to check out the theatre.
As soon as I sat in the creaky wooden seat, I felt myself let go of other thoughts and allow myself to relax. I was (happily) forced to sit still and just soak up the beauty around me.
I let my soul be soothed by the music, selflessly played for my enjoyment. The guitarist played with such love and passion, and I wasn’t expected to contribute, plan, perform, or do anything. All I had to do was sit, breathe, and receive the gift of his music.
It reminded me of when I was in college for music and the school would have weekly recitals. I loved hearing the classical guitar students play. In the dark theatre with just the sound of the peaceful guitar, my worries would fade away, my body would relax, and I felt like I could breathe easily again.
The soothing music was punctuated by the boom of fireworks that seem to always be exploding here. They are set off from the churches to celebrate weddings, births, or just for the heck of it. Each explosion made me smile and remember that we are truly in Mexico.
I was enchanted by the vibrancy of the colors throughout the theatre. I felt grounded by the reds and golds, uplifted and calmed by the sky blues, and amazed at the artistry and craftsmanship that created such a beautiful setting.
Receiving love, relaxation, and beauty isn’t easy for some of us. We prefer to give rather than receive, or we keep moving forward at a pace that doesn’t allow for quiet rest.
But taking the time to breathe and receive is a gift that nourishes and renews your spirit. It allows you to be the best version of yourself and to remember that there is more to life than the fears or worries that sometimes vie for our attention.
Whether it’s enjoying a hug from your loved one or soaking in the sound of beautiful music, I hope you make time to breathe and receive today too. There is time for you, and there is time for peace.
Sending lots of love your way!
